Drupatee Ramgoonai started as a chutney entertainer, branched off into Calypso, and then went full circle back into the Soca Chutney arena. She is regarded as the person who first promoted the Soca and Chutney fusion commercially. She actually sang a composition titled Chutney Soca in 1987 when she launched her Calypso career at the Cultural Gallery Tent. The following year she produced her monster hit Mister Bissessar. Her pelvic gyrations complemented her follow-up hits such as Pepper, Hotter than a Chula and Tassa. Yet one of her memorable songs was Special Brew composed by Ray Holman & Merchant. Today her repertoire features songs like Lati Mange much as she did Nowjawaan in her earlier years.

Sanelle Dempster has been a band singer professionally since 1991. She began with the band Taxi and had stints with Atlantik, Traffik, and Sound Revolution before finding a home at Blue Ventures, her current band. In 1999 she released her first “solo” single, The River. This propelled her into the limelight and culminated with a resounding victory in the roadmarch race. She became the second female to earn this elusive honour after Calypso Rose broke the male strangle-hold in the seventies. Tall, dark and usually clad in sexy outfits, Sanelle has matured into a top class frontline performer with a distinctive style.

Despite a baptism of fire when given the “acid test” at the Calypso Fiesta in San Fernando in 1986, Denyse Plummer survived the onslaught and triumphed in 1988 as Calypso Queen, with her trademark Len “Boogsie” Sharpe composition, Woman is Boss. 1989, she made her first trip to the “Big Yard” with the prize-winning nation building song, Together Right Here. She continued her winning ways as Calypso Queen for four consecutive years along with the Young King and Calypso Queen of the World titles in 1990. Noted for her creative costumes and elaborate presentations she climaxed her career in 2001 copping the National Calypso Monarch title with Nah Leaving and Heroes. She was just the third female to achieve that distinction, truly proving that woman is boss.
