In celebration of our unique Architectural Culture
Typically, the culture of a country is reflected in its architecture. The
Egyptian pyramids, the rice paper and bamboo houses of Japan, the pueblos of
south western USA, all bear the stamp of the peoples who designed and
constructed them. Critically examined, these structures reveal a wealth of
information about the socio-cultural mores of their times.
A prominent part of Trinidad & Tobago's rich cultural heritage is our
treasure trove of old colonial homes. Illustrative of a pivotal period in
our history, these old homes are, unfortunately, gradually being demolished.
Slowly, surely a vital part of our cultural history is being lost.
Fortunately for coming generations, there is an artist who has made it his
personal mission to preserve this part of Trinidad and Tobago's history.
With admirable dedication and amazing dexterity Graham Chin has built small,
scaled models of some of our old colonial buildings. Accurate down to the
last finial and turret, these works of art are magnificent replicas of the
homes of an unique era in our history.
For 2006, Tatil pays tribute to the artisans of a bygone era and the artists
of today who use their talent to preserve our rich architectural heritage. |
