George Brown House
Constructed for the Siegert Family of Angostura Bitters fame, this building
is one of the finest examples of the design genius of George Brown, the
architect credited with the transformation of Port of Spain in the 1800s and
whose name it now bears.
Known for his decorative and structural use of cast iron, as well as his
prefabrication of fretwork, George Brown's first building in Trinidad was
the magnificent Boos family home at #6 Cipriani Blvd. POS, which now houses
Jenny's on the Boulevard.
Trinidad and Tobago owes much to this talented Scotsman whose other
buildings include Mille Fleurs, Hayes Court, the Archbishop's House as well
as almost all of the buildings on lower Frederick Street of which, sadly,
only a few remnants remain. |
